How to do Threads brand monitoring without reading every post — with Threads Brand Monitoring: AI Sentiment & Mention Alerts

Tutorial article for the Apify blog guest program, dev.to, Medium and Hashnode. Numbers are from the demo run and the AI example run of 2026-09-28; the live-search yield is an estimate until the first measured live run.

The problem

Threads has become the place where people complain about an app update, ask "any recommendations?" before they buy, and compare tools out loud. A brand or support team that wants to see those posts has three options today: scroll the Threads app search one keyword at a time, pay for a listening seat that does not cover Threads (Brand24 $199/month, Awario $29, Syften $29.95 list no Threads source; Hootsuite covers it only on its Listening upgrade from $99/user/month), or run a Threads scraper and read hundreds of raw posts. The scraper route is where most teams end up — and it bills every post, including "the notion of free will" when your brand is Notion, crypto giveaways that tag you, and the same posts again next week. Reading 60 posts to find the 20 that matter takes most of an hour.

Step by step

  1. Open the Actor and click Try it. The form is pre-filled with 8 sample Threads posts about Notion. Press Start: in under a second you get 6 qualified mentions — the "notion of free will" homonym and a hashtag-stuffed giveaway are dropped free. The Mentions (best first) view shows priority, type, sentiment and relevance (docs/img/shortlist.svg).
  2. Type your own brand. Replace Notion in brandTerms with your brand (e.g. Acme), add a competitor in competitorTerms and one line in brandBrief ("Acme — the CRM for small agencies."). Typing your brand switches the run to the live Threads search; maxDiscoveryChargeUsd ($0.50) caps what the search may cost.
  3. Keep the AI on. Your first 25 qualified mentions are free on either tier, so the first run shows what the AI adds: a confirmed brand match, an insight, a verbatim quote and a reply draft for complaints and questions.
  4. Open the Act now view (docs/img/act-now.svg): priority, suggested action (escalate_support, reply, sales_follow_up, thank_and_amplify), the quote and the draft. Export to CSV / Excel or send it to Sheets.

What a run costs

1 term × 80 posts: the automation-lab Threads Scraper $0.42 on your Apify account → ≈ 27 qualified mentions (1 in 3, estimate) × $0.0035 = $0.09 → $0.51 in total, ≈ $0.019 per qualified mention. With the AI: 27 × $0.009 plus ≈ $0.14 of tokens → $0.80. The first 25 qualified mentions are free, so the first run costs the search and 2 mentions. The cheaper futurizerush source brings the search down to $0.22.

Automate it

Your first real run saves the search as a task; open it and click Schedule (weekly), with your address in notifyEmail. Every run delivers only new mentions (cross-run memory), and the digest opens with the change since last week: "vs last run: mentions 41 → 55, complaints 3 → 6". For a pipeline, call it from Python:

from apify_client import ApifyClient

client = ApifyClient("<YOUR_API_TOKEN>")
run = client.actor("<your-apify-username>/threads-brand-monitoring-ai").call(
    run_input={"brandTerms": ["Acme"], "competitorTerms": ["Globex"], "brandBrief": "Acme — the CRM for small agencies.",
               "maxQualified": 50, "maxDiscoveryChargeUsd": 0.5},
    timeout_secs=3600,
)
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
    print(item["priority"], item["mentionType"], item["url"])
